The Playmobil Nativity Birthday Cake

For her fourth birthday party, Amabella chose to have a Nativity Party.  I didn’t quite know what it would look like, but it turned out beautifully.

I made my life easy and chose to buy a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting from Costco and place a Playmobil Nativity set on the top as her cake topper and birthday gift.  She requested roses on her cake, so I moved roses from the center of the cake to the front sides where I could squeeze them on.  🙂  It was a quick cake-making process, which sure made it more relaxing for me the day before.

My friends, who are also the childrens’ Pastor and Youth Pastor at our church, Rosalynn and Trevor Harper, allowed me to borrow Nativity costumes, the manger, and baby Jesus from the church.  They spend a good chunk of the Wednesday prior helping me look through possible costumes to borrow and craft ideas I may want to use.  Despite the many ideas and the few things I brought home, we did much less on the actual day than I had expected.

The children (and some of the adults) arrived and headed right outside to play.  Some played soccer while others started right into the bins of dress-up clothing and into our “stable,” which was the girls’ play house.  Most of the girls were Mary or an angel.  Amabella held onto Jesus, wrapped in “swaddling cloth,” nearly the entire party.

Then, with the wonderful help of Rosalynn, we let the children (mostly the 3-6 year olds, including Adeliza of course) make “gingerbread Nativities.”  We used graham crackers, frosting, gingerbread stars, chocolate marshmallows, cinnamon marshmallows, gingerbread people shaped marshmallows, small white marshmallows, and stick pretzels.  I had more treats that could be used, but we found that this was quite enough.  Everyone was so creative and had a wonderful time.  Some of the kids had help, while others created on their own.  Avalina eventually wanted to join and eat some marshmallows and pretzels.  I let her have a few.  🙂

Next, we had a little lunch, cake, and quickly opened a couple presents from Amabella’s friends from church before they had to leave for a basketball game at the church.

None of the other crafts were done, but that was totally fine.  The older kids left with a nativity ornament to paint or color and a bible coloring book and crayons/markers.

Next, we spent time with the grown-up family and friends, as well as Lucca and Hazel.  Ama opened presents on the couch very relaxed, while we all sat around.  Her sisters were wonderful and patient.

Overall, the time was so nice as it was fun with children, a casual visiting time with adults, and relaxing for me.

I am so thankful for my mom, who always comes early to help me tidy up and set up and then helps keep the party running by refilling things for us.

We had a need group of people this time: a little of my family, Oma, some of our family friends, and a couple friends from church with their kids (and their nieces and nephew).
